  • Firework Safety Tips

Gander Fire Rescue would like to remind you to keep safety in mind while using family fireworks this holiday season.

    1. Read All Instructions. Read all instructions and safety requirements ahead of time.
    2. Follow the Laws. Adhere to your local and provincial laws regarding the purchase, possession, and use of consumer fireworks.
    3. Transport Safely. Always transport fireworks in your trunk or in a non-sparking container with a lid. Do not smoke while loading, transporting, or unloading fireworks.
    4. Choose a Clear, Open Area. Only use fireworks in an open area away from buildings, vehicles, overhead obstructions such as power lines, and dry brush/grass. A minimum clear area of 30m x 30m is required for the safe use of aerial fireworks such as Roman candles, and 20m x 20m for fountains or other ground-based items.
    5. Have Water Nearby. Keep a garden hose or a bucket of water nearby.
    6. Keep Spectators Safe. Keep all spectators at least 20m away.
    7. Keep Children Away from Fireworks. Never let children handle, play with, or fire fireworks under any circumstances. Even sparklers, which are often considered "safe" fireworks for children, burn at very high temperatures and can ignite clothing.
    8. Clean Up After the Show. Wait 30 minutes after the display has finished. Check the firing area for duds, clean up all debris, and dispose of it appropriately. Check for debris in a 30m circumference around the firing area. Inspect the area the next morning for any debris that may have been missed.
    9. Pets. Check with your neighbors if they have pets, and let them know you will be firing fireworks that evening.

  • Reminder: Winter parking ban is in effect

We understand that it takes time to adjust to the snowy conditions.

However, this morning, our snow clearing team encountered 17 incidents of vehicles parked roadside, which hindered their operations. Our team works tirelessly, often in challenging conditions, to keep our roads safe. We need your help to make their job easier and to ensure everyone's safety on the streets.

The winter parking ban is in effect until April 30, 2025. During this time, street parking is prohibited from 12 AM - 8 AM or at ANY TIME that would obstruct snow removal.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe and accessible, as we embrace another NL winter!

    Thank you for your understanding.

  • Public Notice: 2024/2025 Snow Plan

Our 2024/2025 Snow Plan is adopted and we are ready for the winter!

This plan outlines the equipment, personnel, routes, and priorities for clearing snow and ice: https://www.gandercanada.com/home-property-and-roads/snow-clearing/

This year, the building at Cobb's Pond Rotary Park will be accessible throughout the winter, and the paved walking trail around the bowl will be cleared.

Additionally, as part of the 2024 Budget, Council purchased a sidewalk snowblower! This new equipment will be put to use on a trial route focusing on improving sidewalk services, especially near schools.

Our crews put in long hours, often in challenging conditions, to help maintain a safe community.

A little patience and kindness can go a long way, especially during an NL winter!
