Gander to Federal Leaders: More Than a Story— A Future Worth Investing In (March 26, 2025)

GANDER, NL – The Town of Gander is grateful to have welcomed Prime Minister Mark Carney this week during his visit to the community. Known for its compassion and hospitality, Gander's story resonates both nationally and globally, and the Prime Minister's visit reaffirms this.

As the country heads into a federal election, the Town of Gander is emphasizing one crucial message: we are more than a story—we are a community worth investing in.

Mayor Percy Farwell stated, “Our community responded with compassion and solidarity on September 11, 2001, and the story reflected in Come From Away continues to resonate with many. We are experiencing rapid growth, and to sustain this momentum, we need tangible federal support.”

In a time when investing in Canada is more crucial than ever—amidst challenges such as tariffs and economic pressures—investment from the Federal Government is essential for fostering resilience and growth in communities like Gander.

Gander's strategic location has long positioned the community as a significant player in aviation and defense, holding global importance as a vital gateway within North America. The success of Come From Away has made Gander a hot spot for international visitors eager to experience the hospitality and spirit of this vibrant community.

“We value the recognition,” Mayor Farwell continued, “but we now urge all federal leaders to transition from recognition to partnership.”

In addition to other continued municipal support from the Federal Government, the Town is calling on all parties and federal leaders to commit to investment in three key areas:

  • Gander International Airport – As a nationally significant transportation hub, the airport facilitates not only passenger travel but also commerce and tourism, playing a crucial role in nation-building efforts. Investing in its capacity and modernization is key to ensuring that Gander remains a strategic asset for the country.

  • 9 Wing Gander – This installation plays a vital role in Canada’s military and emergency infrastructure, providing essential support to national defense and disaster response efforts. Investing in its capacity and modernization is key to ensuring that Gander remains a strategic asset for Canada.

  • Gander’s new Event and Active Living Centre – Currently in the planning phase, this facility will support wellness, recreation, and tourism initiatives, holding the potential to significantly spur economic development. By further enhancing Gander’s position as a sought-after destination for events, this investment will not only benefit residents but also attract visitors from near and far.

The Town of Gander encourages residents to participate in the upcoming election by casting their votes and engaging in conversations with candidates about the community's priorities. The Town believes that every voice matters, and together, the community can advocate for the investments needed to secure a bright future for Gander.
