Introducing a Roundabout to Gander

Construction is underway for the community's very first roundabout, at the intersection of Cooper Boulevard and Memorial Drive.

This initiative comes in response to increased traffic on Cooper Boulevard, with funding allocated during the 2024 budget process. A report by traffic engineers recommended the roundabout as the best solution to improve long-term safety at this busy intersection. The project is cost-shared through the provincial Multi-Year Capital Works funding program.

Roundabouts can feel a little overwhelming. To help you navigate with confidence, here are some tips!

What is a Roundabout?

A roundabout is a circular intersection where traffic flows counter-clockwise around a central island. It helps reduce collisions, improves traffic flow, and enhances pedestrian safety.

How to Drive in a Roundabout:

  • Slow down as you approach
  • Choose the correct entry lane based on signs
  • Yield to pedestrians at the crosswalk
  • Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout
  • Do not change lanes once inside
  • Signal as you exit and yield to pedestrians
  • Give larger vehicles extra space, they may need both lanes

For Pedestrians:

  • Always use the designated crosswalks
  • Extend your arm at the curb to signal intent to cross
  • Wait for cars to stop before stepping onto the road
  • Use the splitter island to cross one lane at a time
