Parks and Playgrounds

Gander Field Complex

ballparkThe Gander Field Complex is located in the heart of Gander on Elizabeth Drive. The complex consists of a variety of recreational facilities including three softball pitches (one of the softball fields is lighted), a baseball diamond, two tennis courts, a skateboard park and accessible washrooms.

In addition to the ballfields located in the Field Complex, a fourth softball diamond is located at the corner of Magee Road and Raynham Avenue. As well, the Town of Gander has 2 soccer pitches located behind Gander Academy with access to the field and parking area from Sullivan Avenue. These fields are designed to facilitate a number of functions such as; local soccer leagues, rugby, touch football, and a variety of other community and school based activities.

These facilities are maintained and controlled by the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department under the auspices of the Town of Gander. Information concerning field or facility bookings can be acquired by contacting the Parks & Recreation Department at 709-651-5927.

Splashpad

splashpadThe Gander Lions Club Splashpad is located on Elizabeth Drive at Memorial as part of the Recreation Field Complex. The Splashpad is a community project of the Gander Lions Club, in partnership with the Gander Consumers Co-op Society and the Town of Gander. The Splashpad operates, weather permitting, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 days a week throughout the summer months.

Skateboard Park

For the skateboard enthusiast who likes to grind and perform tricks, Gander has an outdoor skateboard park. Located at the field complex on Elizabeth Drive, this park has a Quarter Pipe, Pyramid, Grind Rail and much more!

Playgrounds

playgroundThere are a number of playgrounds and tot lots throughout the Town of Gander. These play areas house up-to-date and safe equipment.

Outdoor Skating Rink

rinkThe Town of Gander and community volunteers maintain an outdoor skating rink, as weather permits, for general skating and shinny hockey. The rink is located in the field complex parking lot adjacent to the Splashpad at the top of Elizabeth Drive.

This facility is unsupervised and users, and parents of underaged users, are urged to read and respect the rules posted at the site. Training is available for anyone wishing to assist with flooding and maintenance.

Tennis Courts

Gym

CFB 9 WING Gander Facilities

The Canadian Forces Base 9 Wing Gander facilities are located off James Boulevard near Gander International Airport. The Base contains a wide variety of recreational facilities including a swimming pool, tennis court, softball pitch, squash courts, gymnasium and weight room.

Gander Academy

This K-6 school has a well equipped gymnasium, that is used for many activities for all ages.

Gander Golf Course and Driving Range

golfOverlooking Gander Lake is a scenic 18-hole golf course. The course offers a combination of long, flat fairways and others which are short, steep, and very deceptive. The course is fun and challenging for all caliber golfers. To practice your swing, a driving range is available on the Gander Bay Road. It is approximately 274.3m (300yd) in length in a peaceful country setting allowing you to concentrate and relax.

Gander Curling Club

The Gander Curling Club is located on Airport Boulevard and has four sheets of ice for the sports minded curler. A beautiful club, which also has a lounge and dance floor, the Gander Curling Club hosts many bonspiels which are available for participation throughout the season.

Airport Nordic Ski Club

Located 3 km west of Gander on the TCH, the Airport Nordic Ski Club has 16 km of groomed trails suitable for all levels of skiers and snowshoers and 6 km of ungroomed snowshoe trails. Three kilometres of trails are lighted for night skiing. Skiers can purchase memberships or pay day use fees.

Located just off the Trans Canada Highway heading east toward St. John’s, the Rod and Gun Club provides a place for you to improve your marksmanship.

The Mighty Gander River Trail

ganderrivertrailHailed as one of the most remarkable recoveries of Atlantic Salmon stocks in Eastern North America, this world class river offers thrilling adventures and remarkable scenery.

Located 18 km west of Gander at Glenwood, the main stem flows 35 miles through the wilderness east to the scenic communities of Gander Bay. All of the main stem is accessible mainly by a 25 foot powered river boat, a craft engineered and built to power its way up through the chutes and rapids of the mighty river - a boat ride you will never forget! Highly skilled guides, including aboriginal guides, are readily available to get you to the best spots.
