Garbage Routes

Please note: Curbside collection of household garbage is conducted by, and under contract with, the Central Newfoundland Waste Management Authority. For information on policies, procedures, hazardous waste disposal or other inquiries, click here for the CNWMA website, or telephone 709-653-2900. When a holiday falls on a Monday, garbage on routes normally serviced that day will instead be collected on the Wednesday of that week.

Garbage Nets

Note: All garbage placed for collection shall be covered by metal or plastic container, netting, or blanket at all times. 

Suggested methods are:

• Cover garbage with a piece of carpet, tarp, or similar material which will be left for re-use.
• Use garbage cans.
• Use “Fling-It Garbage Nets” available for purchase from Broadening Horizons Recycling.

Residents are reminded that it is the homeowner’s responsibility to clean up any garbage remaining after curbside collection. Complete garbage regulations are available at the Municipal Works Department or as a PDF by clicking pdficon here. The Town of Gander appreciates your cooperation in helping to keep our Town clean and tidy.

Restrictions

• Containers shall not be put out for collection except on the day designated for collection in the area.

• No person or persons shall permit any animal owned by him or under his control to pick over, interfere, disturb, remove or scatter any material placed out for collection.

• No householder shall put out for collection more than six (6) containers or their equivalent for collection by the Town on any one collection day.

• No person, other than the employees of the Council authorized for that purpose, shall pick over, remove, disturb or otherwise interfere with any garbage or refuse placed for removal by the Council whether or not it is enclosed in receptacles or containers.

• Garbage containers and bundles shall be placed for collection in front of the premises at the curb or street line no earlier than 6:00 a.m. and no later than 8:00 a.m. on the day designated for collection.

• Containers and bundles should not weigh more than 50 lbs./22.5 kg. All paper, newspaper, magazines, cardboard or cartons not placed in water tight cans or approved polyethylene garbage bags (Small plastic supermarket shopping bags, kitchen catchers and cardboard cartons are not considered suitable containers) shall be flattened out and securely tied with strong twine or rope in convenient bundles. A polyethylene garbage bag shall have a material thickness of at least 1 ½ mil, and shall have a minimum size of 26" x 36"/66cm x 91cm.

Waste Transfer Station

The Town of Gander, in partnership with PBO Industrial Disposal Inc., operates a waste transfer station located on McCurdy Drive, next to the Public Works Depot.

For a nominal fee, residents may dispose of metals, household garbage, bulk furniture, wood products, drywall and paper products. The transfer station operates on selected Saturdays only, year-round, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Saturday. Click here for transfer station drop-off fees in PDF format.

Residents are encouraged to use this facility for all household debris and surplus items that cannot otherwise be reused, re-purposed or recycled.

The waste transfer station will accept materials on the following Saturdays:

Residential Cleanup Events

The Town of Gander conducts special residential cleanup events several times each year to collect refuse other than regular household garbage. The Town of Gander 2017 Spring Special Clean-up event will be held May 8 – 19.

The residential clean-up system is as follows:

- Under this system, each street will be completed once during each week of the clean-up period.

- Clean-up refuse will be picked up on the day of your scheduled household garbage collection.

- Refuse must not be put out before or after the designated dates for the clean-up.

Please sort refuse into Five (5) separate piles at the curbside as indicated:

Pile 1:    Regular household/kitchen garbage and recyclables, in the appropriate clear or blue bag.

Pile 2:    Metals, including large appliances made mostly of metal.

Pile 3:    Branches must be tied and bundled (max. 5ft lengths).

Pile 4:   Construction and Demolition wood, lumber, wooden chairs & tables, wooden dresser/desk. All nails must be removed or completely bent into wood.

Pile 5:   All other refuse, including covered furniture, mattresses and plastic debris. 

- All loose material (gyproc, glass, shingles, ceramic tiles, etc.) must be in appropriate container (max. 50lb per container). 

- Broken glass and other sharp objects must be clearly marked.

For Car Wreck removal, please call Central Metals (1983) Ltd. at 256-7780. Rocks, gravel or concrete will not be removed.

Hazardous waste such as propane cylinders, paint, pesticides, oil, etc. will not be collected. Please contact the Norris Arm Regional Waste Management Facility at 651-2930 ext. 9 for further information.

Garden Waste will not be collected; however, it may be dropped off at the compost site located at 34 McCurdy Drive at any time.

Year-round disposal services:

1. Residents are reminded that the McCurdy Drive Waste Transfer Station accepts materials on selected Saturdays throughout the year. 

2. Metals may be dropped off at Central Metals (1983) Ltd. during normal business hours.

3. Good Used Furniture will be collected by Evangel Pentecostal Church. To arrange pick-up please call 256-4762.

4. Grass and Leaves may be dropped at the community composting site located at 34 McCurdy Drive.

5. Trees and Branches may be dropped at the chipping site adjacent to the Magee Road Treatment Plant.

6. Computers and peripherals including printers and monitors, along with home or personal audio/video systems and non-cellular phones, may be dropped off at Scotia Recycling, Green Depot, located on Garrett Drive.

Please note: This clean-up event is for Town of Gander residents only; contractor-generated debris or refuse brought in from other communities will not be collected.

Year-Round Disposal Services

Good used furniture will be collected by Evangel Pentecostal Church; call 256-4762 to arrange pick-up.

Grass and leaves may be dropped at the community composting site on McCurdy Drive; trees and branches may be dropped at the chipping site adjacent to the Magee Road Treatment Plant.

Old or unwanted cell phones, smart phones and accessories such as rechargeable cell phone batteries and chargers may be dropped off at GBS Communications Inc. in the Gander Mall or at The Source located on Roe Avenue.

Computers and other electronics, including non-cellular phones and televisions, along with home, personal or automotive audio/video systems, desktop or portable computers and peripherals including printers and monitors, may be dropped off at the Scotia Recycling Green Depot on Garrett Drive.
