Types of Jobs

constructionhatThe main economic industries for the Town of Gander are in the areas of transportation, communications, public administration and defence. In addition, a large portion of Gander’s economy is driven by the service industry.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is Gander’s largest employer, providing a total of 1,247 jobs, led by the health care and education sectors, as well as the Government Air Services Division. The Government of Canada follows with 479 jobs, most associated with 9 Wing CFB Gander. Nav Canada employs 326 workers, while CHC Composites has 105 on staff. Other major employers represent the retail and hospitality sectors. The Town of Gander and Aliant Communications also rank among the top 10 employers.

Gander is currently experiencing an overall employee shortage, with positions available across the retail and hospitality industries, as well as the general construction trades. In addition, the Town is working closely with major aerospace manufacturing and support companies to bring new, full-time, permanent jobs to Gander. These companies are prepared to train motivated high school graduates, though post-secondary education or experience in the skilled trades would be considered assets.

Starting a Business

manatdeskMunicipal, provincial and federal governments in Canada encourage entrepreneurship as a key economic generator and, while many aspects of business development are closely regulated by one or more levels of government, all offer information and services to help private business succeed.

At the municipal level, the Town of Gander only requires a business license for taxicab and bus operators, mobile or seasonal vendors and home-based businesses (HBBs). Depending on the type of business, other municipal bylaws may apply and building, occupancy or signage permits may be required if storefront properties are involved.

The Town of Gander Zoning Bylaw allows occupants of dwellings to conduct certain businesses from their homes. The standards for HBBs are intended to seek a balance between maintaining a quiet, safe and aesthetic residential environment while supporting the aspirations of home-based entrepreneurs. Business activities which do not meet home-based development standards must locate in commercial or industrial areas. HBBs are subject to an annual taxation rate, as are storefront businesses.
